What it is
Cardiorespiratory fitness describes how well your heart, lungs and muscles work together to supply and use oxygen during sustained effort. It is often summarized as VO2 max, the maximum rate at which your body can use oxygen.
Why it matters
In large cohort work, cardiorespiratory fitness shows a strong, graded inverse association with long term mortality: higher fitness, lower risk, with no clear point where the benefit stops. Few modifiable variables show that shape as consistently.
It is also directly relevant to how life feels. Fitness is what determines whether stairs, hills, luggage and grandchildren are events or not.
How to think about it
- It is trainable at any age. The starting point matters less than the direction.
- The biggest gains are at the bottom. Moving from sedentary to modestly active is associated with the largest change in risk.
- It is an association. Fitter people differ in other ways too, and the literature cannot fully separate those.
Lifestyle levers
- A base of easy aerobic work. Conversational pace, accumulated regularly. Most of the volume should be comfortable.
- Some harder efforts. A small amount of higher intensity work, once a base exists.
- Strength alongside it. The two are complementary, not alternatives.
- Consistency over months. This adapts slowly and rewards patience.
Discuss with your clinician
If you have been inactive for a long time, have known cardiovascular disease, or get chest discomfort, unusual breathlessness or dizziness on exertion, talk to a clinician before starting harder training. That is not boilerplate. Exertional symptoms are worth taking seriously.
